Blog Introduction

Hello there!

So I’m going to start blogging here with my thoughts on the world. As you have probably seen on the site so far and the youtube channels that I’m experienced in radio presenting and production, and I am really into old adverts, TV Idents and TV history in general.

So… things you might not know about me.

I’m Johnny , I am older than I am comfortable with, I have been doing radio since 2003, but I didn’t really find my feet until about 2011. Although my experience before then was useful, I needed something to push me to do better. I had a disadvantaged background so I used to use old equipment, sometimes bodge things together with old stuff and stickytape. I learnt how to edit sound from some free software in a cereal box. I found a radio station who would let me in and I learnt the basics of how to present, Swindon FM. I got involved with some other stations and was a founder of Swindon 105.5 community radio.

I could bang on about my radio stuff, but I will just skip to the good bits. I went to college in 2009 after some career advice to study media, and this lead on to a place at the University Of Gloucestershire, and gained a BA Honours degree in Radio Production (2:1 if you must know!). I have since worked for various commercial and community stations – however local radio has been restructured and many local presenters have been laid off, so that’s made the atmosphere a little difficult.

I’ve been making videos for just as long. originally starting making terrible videos about my family. I started making youtube videos in 2006. My old channel is still out there

I have dyslexia. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 29. It was pretty clear there was stuff going on with it because I found certain things difficult which included job interviews, finding or keeping work, and understanding this has helped me figure out how to work with it. I’ve found disclosing the dyslexia as helpful as it is a hindrance, but it’s easier to try and explain it so others can understand. Some places and people will listen and be patient, where others will make assumptions (thinking it’s just about words, which isn’t so much an issue for me) some will ignore it and get arsy with me, I have been turned down for employment because it’s “too much effort” to make reasonable changes. The positives though – it’s probably why I’m so creative. I think outside “the box”. This does mean in regards to radio and working in general – I have my own way of doing things.

I was recently diagnosed with a dissociative disorder which can occupy some of my time and get in the way of traditional work methods, so I am waiting for therapy on that and making videos when I’m able to, so this is also something that has made life more interesting since the pandemic.

Finally, my family, I have 6 cats, 1 dog, 2 kids and a partner. We all live in Manchester. I am originally from Swindon, known for being the butt of plenty of jokes and I make occasional visits to my family who are all still living there.
